The Website of the Government Museum, Chennai is one of the biggest in the world. It has a slide show, a virtual tour and video clips as special features. It has two domain names viz. www.chennaimuseum.org and www.govtmuseumchennai.org. The website was put out as a draft site on 15.9.2001. The site was evaluated for mistakes, which were corrected. It became a full-fledged site ready for inauguration on 18.12.2001 by the Thiru. M. Thambidurai, Hon’ble Minister for Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. It has a size of 122 Megabytes. It contains 1400 A-4 pages comprising of 52 files less than 250 Kilobytes, 15 files between 250-300 KB and 118 files grater than 200KB includes the total number of 185 files in HTML format. Launching of this website enabled the preservation in electronic form of the artefacts and its exciting visual display and sharing through out the world. The Web Site of the Government Museum, Chennai was highly commended by his Excellency, The President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam during his visit in connection with the 151^st Anniversary Celebrations of the Government Museum, Chennai on 19-6-2003. He also commended the Commissioner Dr.R.Kannan by name during his speech for his creative hard work. He had viewed the Web Site on the plane trip to Chennai to familiarise himself with the museum before his visit.
