The Government Museum, Chennai has a good collection of paintings and sculptures, both traditional and modern. Thanjavur paintings depict the figures of Thanjavur Maratha Kings and Queens and Puranic (mythological) scenes from Tamil Literature and Puranas. The name Thanjavur paintings refers to a certain styles of painting, which attained a characteristic form in the Thanjavur area during the Maratha period. The distinctive characteristic of Thanjavur paintings is their gold gilt and gem set technique. Mahishasuramardini is the manifestation of Durga with more than two pairs of hands. She is represented as killing the demon king Mahishasura (demon with a buffalo head) who is seen lying at the feet of the Devi. Displayed here is the “Mahishasuramardini” as the “Exhibit of the week”. This is an exquisite object and one of the prideful collections of the Chennai Museum.
