Consequent on the reposting of Dr.R. Kannan, I.A.S., as Commissioner of Museums for a second stint on 14-6-2006, a meeting to condole the death of late Thiru K. Lakshminarayanan who died on 17-8-2004 was held on 30th June 2006, at the Museum Theatre, Government Museum, Chennai.

His Excellency, Thiru. Sumith Nakandala, Deputy High Commissioner for Sri Lanka, Ambassador for Sri Lanka in Southern India, Chennai was the Chief Guest. He instituted an endowment to commemorate late Thiru K. Lakshminarayanan, former Assistant Director of Museums and eminent museologist. This endowment was instituted by Thiru. Sumit Nakandala, and Mrs. Dammika Nakandala. A letter for constituting this Endowment Lecture called "Late Thiru. K. Lakshminarayanan Memorial Lecture" to deliver lectures in Government Museum, Chennai by eminent scholars once in a year in the field of Arts, History and Social History was handed over to Dr. R. Kannan. Ph.D., I.A.S., Commissioner of Museums, Government Museum, Chennai. Thiru K.T.Narasimhan, Superintending Archaeologist, Temple Survey, South India Circle. Archaeological Survey of India recalled his association with the late Thiru Lakshminarayanan and his many qualities of head and heart. Dr.R.Kannan became emotional when he recalled his close association with Thiru Lakshminarayanan and how this had resulted in nearly 30 publications. He felt that like Dr.Hardy he had extracted the genius of Lakshminarayanan to the world, which would have gone to the grave unnoticed by persuading him to collaborate on the publications and reorganisation of galleries especially the Exposition on the History of Industry and Handicrafts Gallery organised at the instance of the President of India, His Excellency, Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam and the Guide Book published for it after a lot of research. But at no time did he (Kannan) realise that the end was so near till Lakshminarayanan fell sick, which again was first noticed by him (Kannan). Thiru Nakandala spoke on how art and archaeology should unite and not divide the world. He was leaving for Kathmandu the next day to take up his next assignment as Ambassador to Nepal.

Thiru Curators and staff of Government Museum, Chennai, its District Museum Curators, Thiru T.S. Sridhar, I.A.S., Special Commissioner of Archaeology, Janab Sheriff, Advocate and close friend of Late Thiru. K. Lakshminarayanan, the family members of Late Thiru. K. Lakshminarayanan and eminent citizens participated.
