Inauguration of the Refurbished Coral and other Invertebrates Gallery & the Inauguration of the Exhibition on ‘Wildlife Crimes’ (01.03.11)
The Inauguration of the Refurbished Coral and other Invertebrates Gallery was held at 11.00 a.m., on 01.03.11 at the Centenary Exhibition Hall of the Government Museum, Chennai. The Gallery was renovated at a cost of Rupees eight lakhs by utilizing the State Government Fund. The previous set up of the gallery was like a Reserve Collection Storage Room. Now the gallery has been opened in an attractive way by the introduction of modern lighting, more attractive labels and pictures. The highlight of the gallery was 18 feet length Diorama, depicting the underwater coral sceney.
The Gallery was opened by Dr. K. Venkataraman, Director, Zoological Survey of India. Along with the Inauguration of the Coral and other Invertebrates gallery the Inaugural function of the Exhibition on ‘Wildlife Crimes’ was held at the Centenary Exhibition Hall of the Government Museum, Chennai.
The Exhibition was Inaugurated by the Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Museums Dr. T.S. Sridhar, I.A.S.
The objective of the Exhibition was to create an awareness among public and students about the importance of Wildlife Cosnervation.

Workshop News
Final Session of the three days National Level, Training cum Workshop on ‘Recent Trends in Animal Taxonomy and Systematics’ was conducted at the Centenary Exhibition Hall of the Government Museum, Chennai on 26.02.11. The workshop was arranged by the Post Graduate and Research Department of Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology of Loyola College, Chennai. During the final session, Demo and Lecture on ‘Animal Preservation’ was conducted at the Museum.
The Valedictory Address and the distribution of Certificates to the Participants were done by the Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Museums Dr. T.S. Sridhar, I.A.S.

Refurbished Geology Gallery
The Geology Gallery of Government Museum, Chennai is more than a century old. Beginning as Museum of Practical Geology, the Madras Central Museum in 1851 started with collections received as gifts from the Madras Literary Society. Later more than 1000 objects were collected and the museum was started. After that many times these galleries have been renovated.
The Geological Survey of India has donated 23 objects and charts of great value and they are now displayed in the gallery.
The Refurbished Economic Geology Gallery was inaugurated on 7.2.2011 at 3.00 pm by Sri. A. Sundaramoorty, Director General, Geological Survey of India, Kolkata, Government of India.
Dr.T.S. Sridhar, IAS, presided over the function and released the brochure.
The Geology Gallery is a veritable treasure house of Indian minerals and has been arranged so as to present to the visitors a fairly complete picture of stratigraphy and the range and variety of mineral wealth of India. The Economic Geology deals with the economic aspects, which is the core of geology. This Gallery now includes display about Environmental Geology, Climatology, Paleontology, Metals from the Earth, Fuels from the Earth (Coal, oil and natural gas formation), rocks and minerals of daily use and about the Evolution and the Extinction of the Dinosaurs.
