Dr. R. Kannan, Ph.D., I.A.S., assumed charge
as Commissioner of Museums from 14.06.2006 and as Special Commissioner of Museums and
Commissioner of Museums from 15.11.2006 for his second tenure.
Endowment Lecture instituted :
A meeting was held on 30.6.2006 to
commemorate the memory of late Thiru. K. Lakshminaryanan, former Assistant Director of Museums
and an eminent museologist at the Government Museum, Chennai. Thiru. Sumith Nakandala The
Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lankan Mission for Southern India and Tmt.Dammika Nagandala
instituted an endowment called (late) Thiru. K. Lakshminaryanan Memorial Lecture at the
Government Museum, Chennai. A letter to this effect was handed over to the Commissioner of
Museums.
Report on the Three-Day Workshop on Preventive Conservation of
Manuscript to Create A Pool of Conservators Organised by The National Mission For Manuscript,
New Delhi at The Government Museum, Chennai from 16th to 18th October
2006
As per the request of the Mission Director,
Dr. Sudha Gopalakrishnan, National Mission for Manuscripts, New Delhi, Dr. R. Kannan, I.A.S.,
Commissioner of Museums, Government Museum, Chennai accepted to conduct the workshop on
Preventive Conservation of Manuscripts from 16th to 18th October 2006 in
order to select conservators of manuscripts to form the pool of conservators. 32 applicants
were selected but only 29 participated in the three-day workshop on Preventive Conservation of
Manuscripts. The list of participants is attached in this report. Along with the workshop an
exhibition on Preventive Conservation of Manuscripts was also conducted.
In the valedictory function Dr. R. Kannan,
I.A.S., Commissioner of Museums delivered the Presidential Address. Dr. M. Rajendran,
Director, Department of Tamil Development, Chennai 600 008 delivered the valedictory
address and distributed the certificates to the participants.
Exhibition
In order to create awareness on Preventive
Conservation an exhibition on Preventive Conservation of Manuscripts was arranged in the
Centenary Exhibition all of the museum. Photographs, materials instruments used in preventive
conservation were displayed.

Inaugural Programme
Prof. P. Kamalakannan welcomed the gathering.
Dr. V. Jeevanandan, Convener, INTACH, Erode delivered the inaugural address. Mr. K.M.
Natarajan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Erode delivered the special address after
inaugurating the exhibition. Dr. V. Jeyaraj, Coordinator, Government Museum Manuscripts
Conservation Centre, spoke on the importance of the workshop, activities of National Mission
of Manuscripts and Manuscripts Conservation Centre. Dr. K. Arangaswamy, Retired Professor and
HOD of Tamil Literature, Gobi Arts & Science College, Gobichettipalayam. Prof. A. George
Stephen, Principal i/c, C.N. College, Erode delivered the Presidential Address. Dr. C.
Maheswaran, Curator, Government Museum, Erode proposed a Vote of Thanks.
UGC- Vocational Course
Under UCG programme, Zoology section of Government Museum, Chennai has conducted a Vocational
Training Course on the Preparation of Zoological Specimens for the B.Sc., Zoology students,
Bharathi Womens College, Chennai from 15th to 30th November 2006.
Dr. R. Kannan, Ph.D., I.A.S., Special Commissioner and Commissioner of Museums delivered the
Valedictory address and issued the certificates to the participants on 30.11.2006
International Participation in Exhibitions.
An International Exhibition on Art of India
was conducted at Brusssels, Belgium. The Ministry of Culture, Government of India initiated
the participation of India in this Exhibition. As directed Two Chola Bronzes and 5 Sculptures
from the collections of the Government Museum, Chennai were loaned and displayed in the
Exhibition from 30th October 2006 to 29th January 2007. Thiru. R.
Balasubramanian, Curator, Archaeology Section, Government Museum, Chennai went as a courier to
this exhibition.
A bronze icon of Nataraja, Kankoduttavanitam
village, Thanjavur district from the collections of the Government Museum, Chennai was
temporarily loaned as a prime object for the "Chola Art" Exhibition (7th
November 2006 to 25th Feb 2007) held at Royal Academy of Arts in London, UK.,
through the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and National Museum, New Delhi.
