Some vignettes

Two days at night 21.30 Hours, there was a surprise for the Commissioner who was about to leave for home after having a final look for the day of how the work on the galleries was going on. The Commissioner, Dr. R. Kannan was surprised to receive a phone call from the President himself, who was directly on the line. His Excellency quizzed Dr. Kannan on all aspects of the work done at the museum for the 151st Anniversary; and various aspects of archaeology and temple architecture for more than an hour.

At the end of the function, the President took an impromptu tour of the Bronze Gallery accompanied by the Governor and the commissioner. The great man recognised Thiru. K. Lakshminarayanan, his old friend, whom he met after several years. He took a photograph of himself with his personal camera along with the display of the Nataraja in the Cosmos in the gallery (in front of it). He sent it to the commissioner after the function based on his request sent by e-mail.

When he left we all felt that a truly great man - a man of great learning and great simplicity had graced as chief guest an oldinstitution known throughout the world. We all felt richer not in monetary terms but in terms of what words cannot describe - the nearest word would be

Happy faces of the staff and team members of the Government Museum, Chennai at the end of the grand final on 19.06.2003 in front of the newly conserved Museum Theatre.

To commemorate this occasion special work for Rupees 444.40 Lakhs by way of conservation of the old buildings and reorganising old galleries and setting up of new galleries has been done in the period from 15thOctober 2002 to 31stMarch 2003.

The following items of work were carried out :

1. The fine century old building housing the museum theatre has been conserved and refurbished. This theatre is modelled on the old theatres of London.

2. Air conditioning and renovation of the Bronze Gallery building and the Contemporary Art Gallery building has been done at the instance of the Chief Minister. Their lighting has been made on par with world-class museums like the British Museum, Louvre etc.

3. The Bronze Gallery, which has the best collection of bronzes in the world, the Numismatics Gallery and the Gallery on Chemical Conservation have been modernised with the latest technology in museum display. The British Paintings, the Raja Ravi Varma collection and the Contemporary Paintings have also been re-displayed with modern museological techniques. This represents most of our best collection sections.

4. A new gallery called ‘Exposition on the Progress of Industry and Handicrafts of Tamil Nadu’, which shows their development through the ages, is being inaugurated in the renovated Contemporary Art Gallery. This gallery is a brainchild of the His Excellency, the President himself. It was set up under the special instructions of the Honourable Chief Minister. The latest technology of display has been adopted in this gallery also.

5. The design of these galleries was done by Computer Aided Design and Three Dimensional Modelling. The Single Platform technique used in the automobile industry has been used. It is perhaps the first time in the world that such techniques have been used in the staid world of museums. It is in the fitness of things that this leap-frogging of technology has occurred at the instance of our great scientist President.

6. The Rock Art and Cave Art Gallery was inaugurated on 19-6-2003.

7. The Holographic Gallery, the first in India, is being inaugurated on 19-6-2003.

So much work has never been done in living memory in the museum especially within such a short period.

Governor’s Coach at the Government Museum, Chennai

Governor's Coach in dilapidated condition before restoration till 2003.

Governor's Coach after restoration in June, 2004.

The coach, presented to the Museum, was in a dilapidated condition for 50 years from 1956 AD. It was refurbished and displayed by the effort taken by the Commissioner of Museums, Dr. R. Kannan, Ph.D., I.A.S., in the Exposition of Industries and Handicrafts of Tamil Nadu. Similar materials have been used for replacing the leather upholstery and the wooden body in navy blue colour. For other parts appropriate materials have been used for restoring this coach in scientific manner. This was the last work done by him before he gave up charge on 19th June 2004

The then Governor of composite Madras State, the Maharaja of Bhavnagar used this coach for his State drives till 1952. During the celebrations of Independence Day of the year 1956 held in Chennai, a similar coach (probably the second coach) was used by the President Dr. Rajendra Prasad during his State drive to the Island Grounds to witness the militaryparade. This was the only occasion when this function was held outside Delhi with the President attending it. Even in 1953, an interesting report was published about this Coach in the Weekly Mail {(Saturday the 25th April) (now ceased publication)} which expressed concern about preserving this historic coach. The Governors of the erstwhile British Government for ceremonial functions used this four-wheeled, four-seater coach.
