SPECIAL EXHIBITION ON MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

The Government Museum and Government Music College, Chennai jointly organized a Special Exhibition on ‘Musical Instruments’ at Centenary Exhibition Hall in Government Museum on 24.02.2013. The highlight of the exhibition is that 65 Musical Instruments are displayed including the ‘Ancient harps’ of Sangam period.

Thiru S.S. Jawahar, I.A.S., Principal Secretary/ Commissioner of Museums, presided over the function on 24.02.2013. Tmt. E. Veena Gayatri, Principal and Director, Government Music College, Chennai inaugurated the Special Exhibition on ‘Musical instruments’ and released the brochure. Tmt. R.D. Thulasi Brinda, Curator, Anthropology Section arranged the exhibition.

Due to the good response from the public the exhibition is now extended till 14.03.2013.

EXHIBIT OF THE WEEK – Anthropology Section

Government Museum Chennai is regularly conducting Special Exhibitions on various themes. As a part of the educationalactivities, Thiru.S.S.Jawahar, I.A.S., Principal Secretary/Commissioner of Museums suggested to conduct the “Exhibit of the Week” highlighting an interesting / rare object from each section.

In this series, Exhibit of the week was revived, for the benefit of the public and students. The following exhibits were displayed from the Anthropology Section.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION ON REMNANTS OF INDUS VALLEY CIVILIZATION

Museums are institutions housing original specimens within the four walls of a building with limited manpower and resources. Museums are cultural and educational institutions, which create awareness amongst people.

The Government Museum, Chennai and State Department of Archaeology have jointly organized a Special Exhibition on ‘Remnants of Indus Valley Civilization’ at Centenary Exhibition Hall in Government Museum from 31.01.2013 to 10.02.2013.

Thiru S.S. Jawahar, I.A.S.,Principal Secretary/Commissioner of Museums, presided over the function on 31.1.2013. ThiruC.SenthilPandianIAS., Regional Passport Officer, Chennai inaugurated the Exhibition and released the brochure. Dr. S. Vasanthi, Commissioner of Archaeology Department received the brochure.

The highlight of the exhibition was that the Copper antennae swords of Indus period were displayed which were received from Appukal, Vellore and Anaimalai, Pollachi, Coimbatore districts. This is one of the strongest evidence that Indus Valley Civilization was spread all over India.

Students from various colleges in the State , many foreigners and Public viewed the exhibition.

Dr.S.Rajavelu, Head, Underwater Archaeology, (Tanjore) Tamil Unviersity and Tmt K.Moortheeswari, Deputy Superintending Archaeologist, ASI, Chennai delivered special lectures on “Heritage Awareness to the Students.
