Inspection of Stranded Whale in the Madras Port on 22.11.10

After obtaining permission from the Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Museums, the Curator, Zoology Section and Taxidermist have visited Port Trust Office (at 2.15 p.m. on 22.11.10) and met he Personal Assistant to the Chairman Madras Port Trust. He advised us to wait in the (Port Trust) P.R.O.’s office. At about 3 p.m. we met the P.R.O. and after getting permission from him we have visited the site where the stranded whale was found. One of the Port Trust official have accompanied us. During inspection of the stranded whale the following points have been noted down :

  • It has been informed that the whale was sited as a dead specimen and floating in the Jetty of the harbour at about 10.00 a.m., on 22.11.10.
  • It was not known when the whale had died. In the afternoon itself there was lot of bad smell, due to decomposition of its flesh.
  • The size of the whale may be about 35 feet. It was floating on the sea water (in harbour), ten feet below the jetty level.
  • The head of the whale was having lot of cuts and was in a decomposed state.
  • The whale is a ‘Baleen Whale’ and many longitudinal grooves are found on the lower part of its head.
  • Since the whale is already in a decomposed state lifting the specimen out of water is a tough task. It may break in to many pieces during this process.
