EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS - April 22nd to May 7th 2009
To save "Earth" from global warming and other disasters to create awareness among the public, Government Museum, Chennai organized special exhibition in connection with "EARTH DAY - 2009". The aim of the exhibition was to create awareness about the environmental issues, to understand the need for conservation and management of renewable and non-renewable resources (water, soil air, forests, coal, petroleum, minerals, etc.,) and to know the types of disaster management and its mitigation.
On April 22nd 2009, Thiru K.S.Sripathi, I.A.S., Chief Secretary to Government, Government of Tamil Nadu inaugurated the Special Exhibition at Centenary Exhibition Hall and took part in the "Go-organic Event". He delivered the inaugural address at the Museum Theatre. Dr. T.S. Sridhar, I.A.S., Principal Secretary/Commissioner of Museums, Government Museum, Chennai-600 008 presided and Dr. S.R. Ramanan, Director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai-600 006 gave the special address, on "Global Warming".

On the spot drawing and slogan competitions were conducted on 23.4.2009 and prizes were distributed to the winners on the Valedictory Day.

On 25.4.2009 between 7.00 am and 8.00 am Nature Walk was led by Tmt.M.N.Pushpa, Curator, Botany Section in Museum campus for Public and members of Nizhal Organisation.

"Go-organic" - a special event to save earth from Pollution, Global warming and other disasters due to Human activities" was conducted, in which VIPs, Students and Public registered their support by implanting their palm-prints in various organic colours on a banner. |

27.4.2009 - Special Lecture was organsied by Ms.R.D.Thulasi Brinda, Curator, Geology section on "Tsunami - Hazard Management". Dr. V. Ram Mohan, Director, Centre for Natural Hazards and Disaster Studies, University of Madras delivered the lecture.

4.5.2009 - Prof. P. Kalidoss, Professor and Head of Department (Chemistry), Presidency College, Chennai delivered a Special Lecture on "Safe guarding the quality of Environment" which was organised by Ms.J.M.Gandhi Mathi, Curator, Chemical Conservation Section. |

7.5.2009 - Endowment Lecture was organized by Ms.M.N.Pushpa, Curator, Botany section and Mr.G.Kalathy, Curator, Education section on "Man & Mushroom" by Dr. V. Kaviyarasan, Senior Lecturer, Centre for Advanced Studies, Madras University, Chennai-600 025 at 11.00 am at the Centenary Exhibition Hall. |

The Valedictory function was held on 7.5.2009. Dr. T.S. Sridhar, Principal Secretary/Commissioner of Museums presided over the function and distributed the prizes to the winners of the drawing competition. Dr. R. Annamalai, IFS., Director, Directorate of Environment, Chennai delivered the Valedictory Address along with a power point presentation on "Science of Climate Change". |
More than 500 visitors viewed the Exhibition and participated in the Special Event-Go-organic by implanting their Palm Prints. This event was organized as a First Time Effort and has been a resounding success.
