SPECIAL EXHIBITION ON THE ROMAN COINS AND OTHER ANTIQUITIES FOUND IN SOUTH INDIA
The government Museum, Chennai, Italian Embassy Cultural Centre, New
Delhi and Indo – Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chennai are
jointly organizing a "Special Exhibition on The Roman Coins and other
Antiquities found in South India". This Exhibition was thrown open to
public on the 18th January, 2011 till 2nd February 2011 opened from
10.00 AM to 04.30 PM at the Centenary Exhibition Hall of the
Museum.
Roman Coins found in India are of gold, silver and copper. They range
in date from the first Century B.C.E. to Sixth Century C.E. Romans
came to India for procuring of pepper and spices, sandal wood and
aromatic woods, beryl and other Semiprecious stones.
The Roman Antiquities of (Alagankulam) from the State
Department of Archaeology and of (Arikkamedu artefacts) facts from
Anthropology Section, peacock from Zoology Section, Ivory object for
Archaeology Section are displayed here to impart knowledge about
Indo-roman contact and globalization existed in ancient days.
Inauguration of the Special Exhibition was held on 18th January 2011
wherein Thiru. S.S. Jawahar I.A.S., Secretary to Government, tourism
and Culture Department, Government of Tamil Nadu presided, Dr. Anjela
Trezza inaugurated the Exhibition in the presence of Dr. T.S.Sridhar,
I.A.S., Principal Secretary/ Commissioner of Museums, Government
Museum, Chennai.
ALL INDIA MUSEUMS CONFERENCE, HELD AT REGIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, BHUBHANESWAR - 15TH - 17TH, JANUARY
Attended the All India Museums Conference held at Regional Museum of Natural History, Bhubhaneswar on 15.01.2011. The topic of the Seminar was Museums, Accessibility & Differently –Abled visitors. Shri Naveen Patnaik, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha was the Chief Guest. Shri Debi Prasad Mishra, Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Culture & Tourism, Govt.of Odisha & Dr.C.V.Ananda Bose, Administrator, National Museum & Vice
Chancellor, National Museum Institute, New Delhi were the Guests of Honour. The release of MAI Journal, Lifetime Achievement awards to Eminent Museologists and Launch of MAI Website was done by the Chief Guest Shri Naveen Patnaik, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha. Thiru. N.Harinarayana, former Director of Museums, Government Museum Chennai was one among the Life Achievement awardee.
In Session I, Paper on Accessible Museum Exhibition - Power Point Presentation was delivered by Dr.T.S.Sridhar,IAS, Principal Secretary / Commissioner of Museums, Government Museum, Chennai. The Chair person for the Session was Dr.S.M.Nair Rtd.Director, RMNH, New Delhi. Session 3 was Chaired by Dr.T.S.Sridhar,IAS, Principal Secretary / Commissioner of Museums, Government Museum, Chennai. Accessible Museum Education - Power Point Presentation was delivered by Smt.M.N.Pushpa, Curator, Botany Section & Smt.R.D. Thulasi Brinda, Curator, Geology Section Government Museum Chennai. The Valedictory function was held on 17.01.’11. The Chief Guest was Smt. Kasturi Mohapatra, Commissioner for persons with disabilities, Govt.of Odisha.

Tourism Endowment Lecture
The Tourism Endowment Lecture was instituted by Mayura Travel Corporation, Chennai-600 035, in the year 1997. The third Tourism Endowment Lecture was held on 29.12.2010 at the Centenary Exhibition Hall,
in Government Museum, Chennai. Mrs.M.N. Pushpa, Curator, Botany Section, welcomed the gathering. Dr.T.S.Sridhar, I.A.S., Principal Secretary / Commissioner of Museums highlighted the importance of Chennai Museum and the Roman Coins. Thiru N. Sundarajan, Curator, Numismatic Section introduced the Speaker. Dr. S. Suresh, M.A., Ph.D., Tamil Nadu State Convener, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Chennai, delivered the Tourism Endowment Lecture, on Roman Coins finds in South India and Interpretation from the view point of Roman Numismatics and Economy. Students from the Loyola College, the scholars and researchers in Coins attended the lecture. Thiru G. Kalathi, Curator, Education Section expressed the vote of Thanks.
Preservation of Plants and Plant Modeling Technique Venue : Government Museum, Chennai - 600 008.
In Government Museum Chennai, Plants Preservation Techniques and Plant Modeling training was imparted by the Botany Section from 27th to 29th December 2010. Group of 15 students from Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology Department, Women's Christian College participated in the training programme.
The Training was organized by Tmt.M.N.Pushpa, Curator Botany Section of Government Museum, Chennai. Lecture on "Preservation of Botanical Specimens & Herbarium Techniques" along with field collection was delivered by Tmt. M.N.Pushpa, Curator, Botany, Government Museum, Chennai. Hands on training were demonstrated by the Artist Modeler, Thiru M.P.Raja Sivaprakash Government Museum, Chennai. Wet Preservation and Herbarium preparation demonstrated by the Curator, Botany and Tech Asst. Thiru M.P.Raja Balamurugan. Dr.T.S.Sridhar, I.A.S. Principal Secretary / Commissioner of Museums inspected the Training Session, had discussion with the students, and distributed Participation Certificate to the students.
