Srinivasa with Consorts

Srinivasa with Consorts

Vadakkuppanaiyur, Nagapattinam Taluk, Thanjavur District. Srinivasa height 81 cm, with consorts each 64 cm high. About 11th Century AD.

Another Srinivasa with Devis from Thanjavur District, but with the discus held at right angles to the saggital plane of the body. Both conch and discus have the usual marginal  flames but no central ones. The ornaments that hang  from the front of Sri Devi's lower necklace, instead of uniting as usual with the ornament that hangs from it behind, cross over another a little below this ornament and extend to the  shoulders of the opposite side from their origin.

Srinivasa

Vadakadu, Tirutturaippoondi Taluk, Thanjavur District. Height 63 cm. About 11th Century AD.

This image closely resembles the Srinivasa from  Sirupanaiyur cited earlier in all respects except that the draperies, including the median loop of the girdle, are treated somewhat more conventionally, and that the flames of  the discus (which is at right angles to the saggital plane of the body) and conch  are very small. The bhadrasana has two spikes to carry the tiruvasi which is missing which are supported by yalis. At the base two rings are present, which clearly indicate that this is an utsavavigraha.
