Vaishnavite Bronzes


Garuda

 

 

Garuda

     Kankoduttavanitam, Nannilam taluk, Thanjavur District. Height 20 cm. About 15th Century AD.

     Garuda is standing on a platform with a socket beneath to fit on the top of a pole. In his right hand he holds the tail of a five headed cobra, on the neck of which his right foot is placed. His left hand rests against his hip. A pair of outwardly curved tusks protrude from his upper jaw as in terrible forms of Siva. There are patrakundalas in his ears. The drum and two pipes on the ground at his feet are for heralding the approach of Vishnu.

 

 

Kaliyakrishna

     Nilappadi, Nagapattinam Taluk, Thanjavur District. Height 75 Cm. About 14th Century AD.

     Kaliyakrishna is firmly putting his left foot over the hood of the cobra while his left hand is holding the tail. Right hand is in abhaya. There are Makarakundalas in the ears and a small ornamental loop on each side of his girdle. Kaliya has a human bust with his hands in anjali posture beneath the cobra hood.

Kaumodaki

      Locality unknown. Height 21.5". About 15th Century AD.

     He is standing in the shape of a devotee with hands in anjali posture on a circular pitha. His head is in the shape of karandamakuta. As for ornaments he wears necklets, armlets, bracelets, padasaras, yajnopavita etc., Gada is shown over his head.
