Pterocarpus santalinus
Red Sandal Wood
A medium sized tree belongs to the family Fabaceae . It is distributed through out the Eastern
Ghats. It is an endemic and threatened species. The plant wood is highly prized for house
posts and used chiefly for building purposes and the wood is ground and used for dying wool,
cotton and leather and also for staining other woods. 'Santalin', is the colouring principle.
The wood tonic used as diaphoretic and the wood paste is applied to inflammations. This plant
specimen is displayed as Timber in the Systematic Botany Gallery under the South Indian timber

belongs to the family Rosaceae. It is indigenous to India, distributed in the Southern Western
Ghats,the Nilgiri and Palani hills at an altitude of 1,880 metre. It
