Parvati

Parvati

Okkur, Nagapattinam Taluk, Tanjore District. Height 65cm.About 10th century AD.

Standing. Hands: Kataka, hanging. Kesa-bandha, Makara-kundalas. Threads on trunk extending around both sides but with the two parts crossed behind instead of united. Girdle and cloth not projecting at sides.

This is clearly an image of Chola type and shows the projecting elbow ornaments particularly well. In the treatment of necklaces, trunk threads, etc., it closely resembles the Sita associated with Rama.

Parvati

Parvati with an attendant, Tiruvengimalai, Trichy District. Height 92 cm. 10th Century A.D.

Parvati stands in a tribhanga pose with an attendant and it is a masterpiece of the Cholas. She stands on an oval padmasana over a rectangular bhadrasana. Her right hand is in the posture of holding a flower and her left hand is placed on the head of her dwarf attendant (Vamanika). The modeling of the breasts, the disposition of the hands, especially that of the left hand which has pliability in its gentle way of placing on the head of the attendant and the disposition of the strands of hair are superb.
