Mahesvari

    Tirukkodikkaval, Kumbakonam Taluk, Thanjavur District. Height 60 cm. About 10th Century AD.

     Seated on a lotus pedestal  with the left leg bent and right leg hanging down, wearing a jatamakuta with crescent moon on the right side and cassia flower and snake on the left side. Siraschakra is present. She has ordinary elongated earlobes. The third eye appears as a tilaka mark on the forehead and the face is charming. Two haras adorn the neck. Yajnopavita and udarabandha are present. Katisutra is fashioned like kirtimukha motiff. The upper pair of arms bear sula and  noose. The lower pair of arms is in the posture of holding abhaya and varada.



 

 

Manikkavachakar

      Settipulam, Tirutturaippundi Taluk, Tanjore District. Height 59 cm.About 12th Century AD. 
   
     The details are shown with peculiar delicacy. The usual broad sacred thread is accompanied by another single and more undulating strand-arm without rosary. The band supporting the cloth is accompanied by a thread tied in front of the left leg. Broad circular kesa-bandha at a back of head, flattened behind. Two necklaces but no waist-band, the lower necklace only being of rudraksha beads and hanging low between the breasts.

Natesa

    Kankoduttavanitham, Thanjavur District. Height 86cm. 12th Century AD.  

    This figure of Natesa also has four arms carrying damaru and agni in his upper hands. The lower left is in gajahasta and his lower right is in abhaya. This image is noted for its vigour and it is one among the well executed bronzes. The prabha has interesting details and has become ornate.
