Chandikesvara
Tiruvenkadu, Sirkali
Taluk, Thanjavur District. About 11th Century AD.
The bronze is two handed and is seated on a bhadrasana. The
right hand is in kataka posture suggesting the presence of a parasu (axe);
the left is in the ahuya varada posture. The left leg is folded and rests on the
pedestal and the right leg hangs down and is supported by a lotus flower. The right leg seems
to have been below the ankle. Yajnopavita and udarabandha are present. He
wears a jatamakuta. The face is full of charm and grace. |
Ganesa
Velankanni, Nagapattinam Taluk, Tanjore
District.Height 52 cm. About 10th century AD.
This is a standing
image. Karanda-makuta present over the head. Sacred thread divided in two
ways, both parts passing towards the right, but the upper one not reaching the waist-band,
only continued round the body.
The makuta, necklaces and general style of this image
suggest that it may be considered as of Chola type, though the bows of the girdle are
slightly unusual. The upper right hand holds an axe instead of the usual goad, and the upper
left a rosary instead of the usual noose. |
