Fossil Rhinoceros
The fossils are the recognisable
remains of animals and plants which lived in the past geological ages and preserved in the
rocks of the earth's crust by natural process.
The fragmented skull of a fossil
rhinoceros was found in a well cutting in Sathankulam, Tirunelveli District, Tamilnadu.
The specimen was donated by Thiru S.C.Jeyakaran, Hydrogeologist, Bangalore. The front portion
is a original fossil and the rest is reconstructed by Dr. G.L.Badan, Head Palaeontology
Laboratory, Deccan College of Post Graduate and Research Institute, Pune. Geologically,
the fossil rhinoceros belongs to Pleistocene period. |
