Hero Stones, Memorial Stones and Sati Stones
 

 

Memorial Stone

     Dharmapuri, Salem District (formerly). Height 97.5 cm., Breadth 86 cm. About 8th Century AD.

     Memorial stone in commemoration of Vidyarasi, a Pasupata or Saivite teacher, who lived at Tagadur (Dharmapuri). The figures separated by a Linga represents the teacher as worshipping Siva and as practicing Sivayoga. The inscription which is in old Kanarese, describes the beauty of the ancient town of Tagadur and the virtues of the teacher. It states that the slab was set up in the temple of Bhogisvara, which once stood in Tagadur.

Sati Stone  

 

Sati Stone

     Penukonda, Andhra Pradesh. Height 133.5 cm., Breadth 53.5 cm. About 10th Century AD.

     Sati stone with the carving of a fully decorated hand of a woman who had burnt herself on the funeral  pyre of her husband. Here in this  upper deck the faithful husband and wife are shown seated. On the other side sun and moon are shown to indicate that their fame will live in this earth as long as the sun and moon exist.

 

 

Sati Stone

     Kambaduru, Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh. Height 86 cm., Breadth 50 cm. About 10th Century AD.

     Sati stone of a king and his queen with their figure occupying the main part of the slab. At the top there is a group - Sivalinga, Nandi; the king and queen seated worshipping the Linga. Above the group there is a representation of the sun and moon.
