Painting on Mica

The Tanjore artists are experts in painting on Mica.

It is not clear why Mica was chosen. It is perhaps less fragile than glass and quite transparent. During 18th and 19th century painting on mica was flourished at Patna, Murshidabad and Benares. The Tanjore artists followed their methods. Mica paintings were small in size. Due to small texture of Mica sheets the figures drawn on these sheets are also small in size.
